Décision sur l’élaboration et la mise en place d’une convention internationale sur la diversité culturelle et d’une convention internationale sur la sauvegarde du patrimoine culturel immatériel - décision ex/cl/dec. 67 (iii)

Union africaine - 10 juillet 2003 – 2003/07/10

Following the summit that brought together some fifty African Union member countries in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on July 10, the Union’s Executive Council adopted a decision reaffirming the "urgent need to preserve and promote cultural diversity as an element indissociable from a culture of peace, security, stability, and development.” The Council also firmly supports the process begun by UNESCO to develop and implement an International Convention on Cultural Diversity by 2005. The Council urges member states to refrain from any WTO liberalization commitments involving cultural goods and services "so as not to compromise the effectiveness of instruments aimed at promoting and supporting cultural diversity."
