Séminaire UNESCO-NEPAD :« de la vision à l’action»

Discours de M. Koïchiro Matsuura, Directeur général de l’UNESCO, Ouagadougou. 07/03/2003

In his speech, Mr. Matsuura declared that protecting cultural identities and diversity also appears to be essential for Africa, where cultural goods are feeling the homogenizing effects of globalization. Mr. Matsuura states that “the erosion of cultural identities, and thus cultural diversity, limits the scope for fruitful cultural dialogue and threatens to irreparably diminish humanity’s common heritage.” This is why he considers UNESCO’s Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity, adopted in November 2001 to be a far-reaching instrument for building knowledge-based societies founded on the idea of “cultural give and take” for all the world’s cultures.
