"Soutenir le développement de l’édition et celui de l’industrie du livre dans un souci constant de promotion de la diversité culturelle"

M. Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, ministre français de la Culture et de la Communication, le 7 octobre 2004 - 2004/10/07

On the occasion of his trip to Frankfurt for the 56th International Book Fair, Mr. Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres stressed the importance of cultural, economic, and Franco-German political partnership in the Europe of 25. He was particularly delighted that this edition of the Frankfurt Book Fair - which featured literature from the Arab world - was held in the spirit of cultural dialog. He stated: “ Germany is our natural partner within Europe when it comes to defending cultural diversity. I’m thinking in particular of enforcement of the single book price. In the new European Union, we must promote the cultural and economic specificity of books among new member countries and the possibility of regulating the market to avoid the standardization that now threatens other cultural sectors.” Defending such diversity has its ups and downs, he explains. Stressing that France’s 2005 budget for books and reading shows the great support France accords bookstores, the export of French books, and the weakest sectors of the publishing industry, he added, “We must support the development of publishing and the book industry as part of our ongoing effort to promote cultural diversity. This is where we are heading both within and without France .” ( Available in French ) [77]
