UNESCO : 170th session of the Executive Board - General Debate

Mr. Koïchiro Matsuura, Director- General, UNESCO, 6 October 2004 - 2004/10/06

In response to items 3.1, 3.2, and 4.1 on the agenda of the 170th session of the UNESCO Executive Board, held from September 28 to October 14, 2004, in Paris, Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura expressed his satisfaction with the broad consensual support expressed at the first meeting of intergovernmental experts in favor of maintaining the central principle of cultural diversity and intercultural dialog. “Many of you were pleased with the outcome of the first meeting of intergovernmental experts of UNESCO on the Preliminary draft of a convention on the protection of the diversity of cultural contents and artistic expressions ,particularly the constructive spirit and dialog that animated discussions and debate. I sincerely hope that this first meeting will set the tone for future talks and that we will reach consensus on the text to be presented to the next session of the General Conference. A drafting group will meet in mid-December to rework the preliminary draft in order to present a new version to the second intergovernmental meeting in late January, early February.” (French, English) [76]
