In the previous issue of this Newsletter, we reminded readers of the Second Inter-American Meeting of Ministers of Culture and Highest Appropriate Authorities of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Mexico City on August 23 and 24. Organized as part of a special OAS conference, the event focused notably on culture’s place in the process of social development and economic integration in the hemisphere. Three main themes were on the agenda: culture as an engine for economic growth and employment; challenges faced by cultural industries; and culture as a tool for social cohesion and the fight against poverty. At the meeting, Québec Minister of Culture and Communications Ms Line Beauchamp presented Québec’s involvement as a sign of its desire “to be an active partner in building the Americas and, in a federal framework, promoting its interests within Québec’s area of jurisdiction.” Ms Beauchamp will take special advantage of the meeting to remind attendees of the essential role of creative artists and reassert Québec’s position on cultural diversity. In her words, “it is wonderful to see that the countries of the Americas are increasingly recognizing the importance of culture in the development of our societies.” [68] (Available in French)
