Abdou Diouf, Secretary-General of the OIF, chose Montreal to highlight International Francophonie Day. He is making an official visit there from March 16-18, during which he will meet various government officials to discuss cultural diversity and the 2008 Francophonie Summit. In this regard, Ms. Gagnon-Tremblay is thrilled that Quebec was chosen to celebrate the event this year, following Brussels in 2002 and Libreville in 2003. The Minister stated that Quebec will thus have the opportunity “to express its solidarity towards its francophone partners and demonstrate its interest in promoting French and a dialogue among cultures.” In particular, Ms. Gagnon-Tremblay congratulated the National Assembly on its adoption of a motion she presented for promoting International Francophonie Day, in which she also supported Quebec’s candidacy for hosting the 2008 Francophonie Summit.
