The members of a UNESCO committee, who met in Paris, have chosen Montreal to be the World Book Capital for 2005.  Thus, beginning April 23, 2005, it will be Montreal’s turn to become the center for promoting books and literature on an international scale, on the occasion of World Book and Copyright Day. To highlight this event, Mr. Denis Vaugeois, President of the National Association of Book Editors (ANEL), stated, “At a time when Quebec’s literary production is seeking a rebound on the international scene, the honour bestowed upon Montreal today can only be beneficial to our culture’s influence.” The activities that will be organized in 2005, and the efforts agreed to by different players in the literary world will help promote cultural diversity and will follow in the footsteps of far-reaching events such as the Printemps du Québec in Paris in 1999, and, more recently, Québec as the guest of honour at the Guadalajara International Book Fair of 2003.” (Available in English and French)
