"W ork to strengthen support for the Convention on Cultural Diversity in view of its adoption by the UNESCO General Conference in October 2005"

Jacques Chirac, Président de la République française, Paris, le 29 août 2005 – 2005/08/29

Opening the 13th Annual Conference of French Foreign Representatives, which brought 150 French ambassadors to Paris for three days, President of the Republic Jacques Chirac reiterated the principal thrusts of French diplomacy: “Re-energize the European dynamic, fight threats to our collective security, and counterbalance the excesses of globalization through multilateral action.” This event was an opportunity for France’s head of state to put recent major events into perspective, address main foreign policy issues, and provide a “road map” for France’s representatives abroad. He also invited these representatives to work on the front lines towards the adoption of the Convention on Cultural Diversity: “Organizing a new world order founded on human dignity also means respecting the diversity of identities and cultures. We are in the final negotiating sprint of the Convention on Cultural Diversity. And I ask each and every one of you to work to strengthen support for this text in view of its adoption by the UNESCO General Conference in October.”

Closing the conference, Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin also called on ambassadors to take action on the issue: “I also ask you to work unwaveringly towards the adoption of the Convention on Cultural Diversity at UNESCO’s General Conference, which opens October 3 in Paris. Allow me to salute the remarkable efforts by French-speaking countries and the European Union to bring these talks to successful completion.” [05-25]
