Convención de UNESCO: Chile votará por la diversidad cultural

Ignacio Walker, Ministro de Relaciones Exteriores de Chile, Santiago de Chile, el martes, 28 de junio de 2005 – 2005/06/28

The Chilean minister of foreign relations, Mr. Ignacio Walker, announced on June 28, 2005, that Chile would vote in favor of the draft Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Contents and Artistic Expressions, which will be submitted at the next UNESCO General Conference in October 2005. He made this declaration at the inauguration of the international symposium which held in Santiago, Chile on June 28 and 29, 2005 on the theme “Cultural Diversity: The Value of Difference”. Symposium attendees welcomed the announcement enthusiastically, including representatives of the governments of France and Germany, as well as international guests, academics, and students with an interest in the arts, communication, and cultural industries.

Chilean culture minister José Weinstein pointed out that the symposium was part of the debates that had attracted particular interest both in the international community and at UNESCO for an international convention on cultural diversity to be voted on next October: “There is now a declaration of intent that we will adopt a convention, i.e., a prescriptive instrument,” he declared. He added that civil society had played a decisive role in this new awareness.

The activity were organized by the National Council of Culture and Arts (NCCA) in cooperation with the Chilean Coalition for Cultural Diversity. Numerous experts spoke at workshops, such as that on Free trade agreements and cultural diversity. The experts included Mr. Ivan Bernier, an emeritus professor with the faculty of law at Université Laval in Québec City and an independent UNESCO expert who took part in developing the draft convention; Mr. Paulo Slachevsky, head of the Chilean Coalition for Cultural Diversity; and Mr. Patricio Vilaplana, assistant director of CNCA.
