A decisive step towards Convention on the Diversity of Cultural Expressions

Commission suisse pour l'UNESCO  – 2005/06

In the June 2005 issue of its Information Bulletin, the Swiss Commission for UNESCO reports that though differences of opinion on certain clauses remain, the 130 states that participated in the third session of the intergovernmental meeting of experts at UNESCO adopted on June 3, 2005, a draft convention on the protection and promotion of the diversity of cultural expressions, and asked the UNESCO director-general to forward this document to the General Conference, recommending that it be adopted at its 33rd session in October 2005. The bulletin also notes that Switzerland, which has played an active role in convention work, is behind the inclusion of support for media diversity—including public broadcasters—as a measure the parties can adopt to protect and promote the diversity of cultural expressions. Switzerland has also supported a clause that would clearly recognize the role of civil society and encourage it to contribute actively to achieving the convention’s goals. It also encourages consensus by offering its “good offices.” [05-19]
