Intergovernmental Meeting of Experts at UNESCO on the draft Convention on cultural diversity – Statement of the Quai d'Orsay's spokesperson

Ministère des Affaires étrangères, Paris, le 6 juin 2005 – 2005/06/06

Following the third and final intergovernmental meeting of experts at UNESCO, the French government reported that a “draft Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions” was adopted at the expert level and will be submitted to UNESCO member states for approval at the 33rd session of the General Conference to be held October 3 to 21, 2005, at UNESCO in Paris. “This draft Convention,” stated the spokesperson, “Should bridge a gap in international law: It recognizes the distinct nature of culture and its contribution to development and social cohesion; it confirms the sovereign right of states to adopt and implement cultural policies; and it makes the protection and promotion of cultural diversity a main thrust of policies on international cooperation.” [05-18]
