He mentioned a « crucial and fast-approaching deadline—the October vote at UNESCO on the draft convention to protect cultural diversity and our ability as nations to establish cultural policies and international cooperation in culture from the effects of excessive market liberalization.» To this effect, he declared that « in the home stretch of the difficult negotiations currently under way, the commitment and voices of all will be crucial in determining the success of this common endeavor.
