Chinese Minister of Culture Mr. Sun Jiazheng and his French counterpart, Mr. Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, issued a joint statement in Beijing, China, underscoring both parties’ expectations concerning the international Convention on the protection of the diversity of cultural contents and artistic expressions now underway at UNESCO, and agreed to support its elaboration, according to the Chinese press agency.  Both ministers are convinced that cultural diversity is vital to human society.  In particular, they stress that all members of the international community should take on the responsibility of maintaining such diversity.  They also state that the special nature of local cultural products and services, which are set apart from more ordinary merchandise, must be recognized, and maintain that all nations have the right to take measures aimed at supporting their cultural specificity.
