In a September 21, 2007 press release, the Swiss Federal Council announced that it had approved and sent a draft message to Parliament concerning the ratification of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.
The Confederation’s federal authorities had this to say on the matter, “The principle of cultural diversity is essential to Switzerland and anchored in the federal constitution. The Convention’s ratification will allow Switzerland to reaffirm principles that it defends in its national cultural policy on the world stage. The Convention will also confirm the role Switzerland has attributed to culture as an instrument of development aid. Lastly, it will lead to international recognition for our federal system of division of powers in the field of culture.”
