The secretary general of La Francophonie meets with the European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid

The secretary general of La Francophonie Abdou Diouf met with the European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid Louis Michel on November 28, 2007, in Paris, France. The International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF) press release notes that they held a work session on the state of cooperation between both institutions. It also indicates that they had previously signed a memorandum of understanding to improve consultation, cooperation, and coordination between the European Commission and OIF in August 2006.

OIF goes on to note that, among other things, Mssrs. Diouf and Michel talked of advancing negotiations on the economic partnership agreements (APE) between the European Union and countries in Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific. To this end, they also talked about the status of the OIF-led project—conducted in partnership with the Commonwealth and funded by the EU—entitled “Trade Policy Formulation, Negotiation, and Implementation Capacity-Building.”

Moreover, OIF notes that “the possibility of a cultural partnership was discussed by both delegations in the context of implementing the UNESCO Convention on the Diversity of Cultural Expressions. The issue of support for African creators and for the music, book, and film industries was raised as many countries are having difficulty accessing international funding for these sectors.”
