The Secretary General of La Francophonie, Mr. Abdou Diouf, congratulates Romanian director Cristian Mungiu on his Palme d’Or at the 60th Cannes Film Festival – 2007/06/01

The Secretary General of La Francophonie, Mr. Abdou Diouf, congratulated Romanian director Cristian Mungiu on being awarded the Palme d’Or at the 60th Cannes Film Festival for his film 4 months, 3 weeks, and 2 days. According to Mr. Diouf, Mr. Mungiu’s success at Cannes is a “recognition of the intrinsic talent of this young Romanian filmmaker, whose creativity and courage in dealing with serious social issues have stood him apart over the years.” He added that “the diverse range of films that triumphed at Cannes this year is eloquent testimony to the rightness of our struggle to preserve the cultural diversity that underpins artistic creativity.”

Mr. Diouf also declared that “this marks more than the talent of a new generation of Romanian filmmakers. It marks the birth of a true film industry in Romania, proof that our commitment to cultural diversity is well founded given the impetus it provides to the creation of economic wealth and employment.”
