Since 1990, francophones on every continent have celebrated International Day of La Francophonie on March 20. The 2008 edition will include a number of events like concerts, exhibitions, contests, fine food, literature, and poetry.
With March 28, 2008 and International Day of La Francophonie fast approaching, the secretary general of la Francophonie, Abdou Diouf, sent a message to francophones on all five continents as they prepare to celebrate the French language and the values of La Francophonie.
Mr. Diouf opened by declaring “On March 20, 2008, may La Francophonie be in the hearts and minds of all those who share our language, our values, and our desire for a better future for ourselves and the entire human community.” The secretary general went on to add, “May this International Day of La Francophonie be an opportunity to celebrate La Francophonie’s place at the heart of the cultural diversity which we symbolize, promote, and defend as a fundamental right.”
