Exchange session on the role and participation of civil society in the implementation of the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions

A meeting entitled “The role and participation of civil society in the implementation of the Convention for the Protection and the Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions: An exchange between civil society and Parties to the Convention” will be held in Room II at UNESCO headquarters in Paris on June 23, 2008, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. (Decision 1.ICG 5C). The meeting will take place the day before the extraordinary session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity Cultural Expressions, which will be held from June 24–27, 2008, also at UNESCO headquarters.

According to UNESCO, the meeting “aims to enable civil society and parties to discuss the involvement of civil society in the implementation of the Convention and the relevant modalities.” The working languages are English and French.

Representatives of parties and nongovernmental organizations with activities and interests in the fields covered by the Convention who wish to participate in the meeting are asked to register on the Convention website by June 15, 2008.

The following topics will be discussed during the meeting:

  • The role of civil society in the Convention’s promotion and implementation:
    • Functions and contributions
    • Coordinated approach
  • Civil society’s input on the Organs of the Convention: options and proposals
  • The International Fund for Cultural Diversity and civil society: Contributor? Beneficiary? Service provider?
