Marseille will be European Capital of Culture for France in 2013

The European Commission has announced that the jury responsible for assessing the applications for the title of “European Capital of Culture in 2013,” which met (16/09/08) in Paris recommends that the title be bestowed on Marseille.

Four cities—Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseille, and Toulouse—were left on the list following the pre-selection meeting last December.

According to a Commission press release, the jury visited all four finalist cities in early September, then met with representatives from each city during an audition held September 15 and 16. The jury then evaluated each candidate according to preset criteria for naming a capital, including the city’s European dimension, its attractiveness, and the long term effects of the event, which is planned for 2013. “In that light, Marseille was the best candidate,” states the Commission.

The EU Council of Ministers should officially declare Marseille the capital in May 2009.

In accordance with the decision establishing European Capitals of Culture, France and Slovakia will be the two Member States to host the European Capitals of Culture in 2013. Kosice was recommended as the European Capital of Culture for Slovakia on September 9.
