European commissioner for education, training, culture, and youth on official visit to Ukraine

The European Union has announced in a press release that during his official visit to Ukraine, the European commissioner for education, training, culture, and youth, Ján Figel', presented themes for future cooperation between the EU and Ukraine in the areas of education, culture, youth, and sport.

Commissioner Figel' was on an official visit to Ukraine from October 2 to 4, 2008, during which time he met with Vice Prime Minister for European and International Integration Gregory Nemyria; Education Minister Ivan Vakarchuk; the Minister of Culture and Tourism, Vasyl Vovkun; and the Minister for Sport, Youth, and Family, Yurii Pavlenko. The discussions came on the back of the recent EU-Ukraine Summit on September 9, and were held as part of the future EU-Ukraine Association Agreement.

Minister Figel' said, “I am pleased to hold these talks with our Ukrainian partners. The EU has a lot to offer in terms of promoting exchanges and opportunities for collaboration among our youth. The enthusiasm of the young people I have met here and their dedication to exploring and building on these opportunities are an inspiration, and I wish them every success in their future activities, both in the EU and in Ukraine.”

Among other things, the press release states that during his meeting with Vasyl Vovkun, Culture Minister Figel' stressed the importance of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions for the EU and invited Ukraine to ratify and implement the Convention.
