Abdou Diouf, Secretary General of La Francophonie, met recently in Paris with His Excellency Mr. Kamalesh SHARMA, Secretary General of the Commonwealth, as part of the regular meetings held between the secretaries general of both organizations.
During the first meeting since Mr. Sharma became secretary general in April 2008, both men undertook to reinforce the existing ties of cooperation between the two organizations.
According to the OIF website, “the Commonwealth and La Francophonie share a common vision regarding the top development priorities for Southern Hemisphere countries, particularly in terms of peace, democracy, rule of law, solidarity, sustainable development, education, and training.
“This meeting provided the opportunity for dialogue between the two organizations on development cooperation, particularly the Hub & Spokes Project for ‘building the capacity of ACP countries in trade policy formulation, negotiations, and implementation’ launched in partnership with the European Commission. New opportunities for cooperation were identified in the fields of governance, the economy and development, the environment, and youth.
“The two secretaries general made numerous references to the impact of the global economic crisis on developing countries such as those in Africa, and agreed to work together to help resolve the major issues facing these countries through a holistic and inclusive approach.”
