The European Commission looks at the effects of structural funds on local and regional development

“Supported by EU cohesion policy, culture-based initiatives appear to be making contributions to local and regional development that are often surprisingly effective in both economic and social terms, but the real nature and extent of these contributions is only beginning to be explored,” the European Commission (EC) announced on its website, referring to ongoing work to measure the spinoffs of cultural initiatives.

The EC recently launched a study of projects supported by structural funds and invites all those with an interest in the dynamic role of culture in local and regional development to make an active contribution. You can contribute to this study either by providing information about projects with which you are familiar or by participating in a seminar to be held in Brussels in November 2009.
