Report of the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage on the CETA, the ACTA, and Issues Regarding Cultural Diversity

As reported in the February 21 edition of the Newsletter, hearings of the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage were held on January 31 and February 7. Speakers included Peter Van Loan, Minister of International Trade and Charles Vallerand, Executive Director of the Coalition for Cultural Diversity. A report was recently released on these hearings. Seeking, in part, to ensure that the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions is respected during negotiations between Canada and the European Union for a Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), the Committee summarizes and emphasizes a number of points made by witnesses and makes five recommendations, including the following:

“The Committee calls on the Government of Canada to fully respect cultural diversity treaties and calls on the Government to reaffirm its commitment to fully uphold UNESCO obligations while negotiating any present or future trade agreements.”

The report, available in French and English, is available on the website of the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage.
