New rules for audiovisual media services approved by the European Parliament

Members of the European Parliament voted in favour of the new rules for audiovisual media providers on October 2, 2018. The updated rules have the following aims:

  • Better protection of minors from exposure to violence, hatred, terrorism, and harmful advertising
  • New limits on advertising
  • Requiring a minimum of 30% European content in video-on-demand-platform catalogues

The legislation will apply to broadcasters, video-on-demand and online-sharing platforms such as Netflix, YouTube, and Facebook, and live streaming on video-sharing platforms.

The legislation still needs to be approved by the Council of European Union Ministers before it takes effect. At that point, Member States will have 21 months to incorporate the new rules into their national legislation.
