Changes in consumption diversity on recorded music and book markets

Olivier Donnat, a research officer with the French Ministry of Culture, looked at changes in consumption patterns in the digital age. The two resulting studies, one on the recording industry and the other on the book trade, were released on September 26. 

Looking at recorded music, he describes the French market as a hybrid, since most of the music people listen to is in digital form (like streaming), even though physical purchases continue to account for more than half the industry revenue. 

In the book trade he found a greater resistance to the digital revolution, with only a slight decline in printed book sales between 2007 and 2016.
