Diversity and the Film Industry

The UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) recently released an analysis of its 2014 Feature Film Statistics. The report, based on data from 2012 and 2013 for 97 countries, emphasizes the relationship between cultural diversity and the functioning of the film industry. The notion of audiovisual diversity is broken down for consideration into three component aspects:

  • diversity of sources (diversity of content producers and distributors and diversity of the labour employed by companies);
  • diversity of and in feature films (diversity of film genres, demographic diversity, diversity of ideas);
  • diversity of audience exposure to feature films.

The report is available on the UNESCO website.
