Sensibiliser à la nécessité d’élaborer une convention sur la diversité culturelle à l’unesco : contributions de l’agence intergouvernementale de la francophonie (aif)

Septembre 2003 – 2003/09

As part of ongoing efforts to consolidate the position of francophone countries on the eve of the 32nd UNESCO General Conference, AIF organized 5 regional seminars on cultural diversity. The purpose of the seminars was to identify opinions and establish strategic dialogue between participating counties to support the development of an international instrument on cultural diversity at UNESCO, “an instrument aimed at preserving and promoting cultural diversity in the face of the challenge of globalization.” The meetings were also intended to make participating countries aware of the importance and urgency of rejecting any commitment toward liberalization of trade in cultural goods and services at the WTO. A resolution to this effect was adopted at the instigation of the francophone countries by the 51 member states of the African Union at the summit held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in July 2003. ( The regional seminars were held in various francophone capitals and brought together government experts from ministries of culture, international trade, foreign affairs, and education.
