Cultural practices 1973–2008: Generational dynamics and social pressure

The website of the Studies, Forecasting and Statistical Branch (Département des études, de la prospective et des statistiques-DEPS) of the French Ministry of Culture and Communication has made available a retrospective analysis of the five editions of a study in cultural practices carried out between 1973 and 2008.

This publication reveals some major trends: the massive increase in music consumption and the generalization of screen culture, the decline of print media, the rise of amateur artists, and increased attendance at cultural institutions. It highlights the scope of the renewal of cultural practices and the feminization and aging of audiences, but it also notes that the generational dynamics linked to the diversification of public and private cultural offerings and the profound changes in French society are often subject to influences that hinder the democratic process.
