UNESCO reports on the 6th ordinary session of the Intergovernmental Committee

The Intergovernmental Committee of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions held its 6th ordinary session from December 10 to 14, 2012, in Paris.

The main subjects discussed were the following:

  • Examination of the first quadrennial periodic reports of Parties to the Convention;
  • Overview of progress and continuation of work on implementing Article 21 of the Convention;
  • International Fund for Cultural Diversity (IFCD): Approval of 13 projects for funding, evaluation of the pilot phase (2009–2012), revisions of its Guidelines and implementation of a fundraising strategy;
  • Review of progress toward Convention ratification and implementation of the ratification strategy in 2011–2012;
  • Examination of proposals for an emblem for the Convention and adoption of a preliminary draft operational guidelines for its use.

In addition, subject to approval of the 4th ordinary session of the Conference of Parties in June 2013, the Committee proposed to inscribe on the agenda of the 7th session of the Committee an item on the diversity of cultural expressions in the digital era. Therefore, the Committee “[invites] the Parties that so wish as well as civil society to report to the Committee during its 7th session on aspects of the development of digital technologies that have an impact on the Convention and proposals for future action” (Decision 6.IGC 17).
