Video on demand and catch-up TV in Europe

The European Audiovisual Observatory (EAO) and France’s media development department are publishing a new study entitled “Video on Demand and Catch-Up Television in Europe.”

“Audiovisual on-demand services have multiplied in Europe. The landscape of the services has become very fragmented and is showing very rapid evolution. This report offers a complete and up-to-date overview of the different types of on-demand audiovisual services. It also shows the place that these different services have in the overall strategy of the various players of this market,” reads the EAO website.

The study looks at the following:

  • Over 650 on-demand services operational in early 2009
  • Various distribution networks (Internet, cable, DSL Networks, FTTH, satellite, TNT, mobile telephones)
  • VOD on television
  • Industry strategies
  • Economic models
  • Impact of pirate and video sharing sites
  • Existing services in Europe
  • Challenges of measuring audiences
  • European audiovisual policy

This focused, detailed report is an essential tool to understanding the complexity of this rapidly expanding market. It is available in English, French, and German from the European Audiovisual Observatory.
