The Implementation by the European Community of the UNESCO Convention on Cultural Diversity by Dr. Jan Wouters and Bart De Meester

We draw your attention to a report published on February 27, 2008, entitled The Implementation by the European Community of the UNESCO Convention on Cultural Diversity. The report was written by Dr. Jan Wouters, Professor of International Law and International Organizations, Director of the Leuven Center for Global Governance Studies and the Leuven Institute for International Law, KU Leuven, and Bart De Meester, Researcher, Flemish Fund for Scientific Research, at the Leuven Institute for International Law and Junior Member of the Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies, KU Leuven.

It addresses the legal aspects of the implementation of the Convention on Cultural Diversity within the legal order of the E.C. It consists of four sections:

  • An outline of specific Convention obligations
  • A discussion of the legal status of the Convention, now ratified by the Community, in the E.C. legal order
  • Examples of the Convention’s role in E.C. external relations
  • A discussion of some of the Convention’s possible consequences within the E.C. internal legal order

The report is available from the European Parliament website.
