The European Audiovisual Observatory has just published a special report on European coproductions to be presented at the Council of Europe Film Policy Forum, held in Krakow from September 11 to 13, 2008. The work, which is entitled The Circulation of European Coproductions and Entirely National Films in Europe – 2001 to 2007, was written by Martin Kanzler, in collaboration with Susan Newman-Baudais and André Lange from the Observatory. The report can be downloaded free of charge from the Observatory website.
According to the Observatory, the study analyzes the circulation and performance of European coproductions both inside and outside their national markets and compares their performance to that of entirely national films. The report draws chiefly on data stored in the European Audiovisual Observatory’s LUMIERE database of film admissions. It compares circulation for both film types in terms of the average number of release markets as well the percentage of films that are released on at least one non-national market. Performance is measured by comparing the average number of admissions for each type of film.
