Canada's Digital Fund unveiled

Canada Council for the Arts CEO Simon Brault released details on the new four-year, $88.5 million digital arts fund on March 16 during the Arts in Digital World Summit.

The fund starts up in fall 2017 and runs until April 2021. It will support big projects with funding up to $500,000 as well as worthwhile and exciting projects that benefit a segment of the cultural sector or specific network for less the $10,000.

The fund will have three components:

  • Digital literacy and intelligence
  • Citizen access to the arts and cultural engagement
  • Transformation of organizations

The Canada Council's goal with this fund is to kick start the arts sector's transition to digital within a specific timeframe. The Council also seeks with this funding to act in the interests of sustainable development. This means that artists and arts organizations exercise real control over the management and goals of initiatives receiving support, that everything always be geared to the recipients, and that the public eventually can benefit from approaches thought out and delivered with an eye to their long-term viability.
