Expansion of UNESCO's Expert Facility for the implementation of the 2005 Convention: 43 experts selected

In 2011, as part of an EU (funded project designed to strengthen governance systems for culture in developing countries through technical assistance missions), UNESCO created an Expert Facility staffed by 30 international experts. All are nationals of countries that have ratified the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, and specialists in governance of culture and cultural policies.

Following a recent call for expressions of interest designed to broaden the Facility's talent pool, in terms of both expertise and geographical background, UNESCO has selected 43 international experts (16 from the original facility and 27 new members) with expertise in such areas as cultural statistics and indicators, trade, digital technology, diversity in the media, the status of artists and artistic freedom, preferential treatment, and mobility of artists and cultural goods and services.

Expert Facility activities planned for 2015-2017 will be funded by the Swedish Agency for International Development Cooperation. Objectives are as follows:

  • Raise awareness about the Convention
  • Monitor policies and measures designed to promote the diversity of cultural expressions internationally
  • Support Parties in their efforts to implement the Convention, particularly regarding the development of transparent and participatory cultural policies at the national level.
