Information Meeting of UNESCO's Executive Board

UNESCO held its first information meeting of the year on Friday, January 19. It was dedicated to the preparation of the 177th session of the Executive Board, which will run from April 10 to 26, 2007. In his address to the Executive Board, UNESCO director-general Koïchiro Matsuura noted with regard to the Organization’s sectoral activities that “the challenges the cultural sector will face in years to come will be huge.” According to Mr. Matsuura, such challenges “are part and parcel of the integrated, complementary integration of the seven standards-based instruments that, as a coherent whole, now constitute a pillar for protecting and promoting cultural diversity and, consequently, intercultural dialog.”

With a view to simplifying the cultural sector and allowing UNESCO to face these challenges, Mr. Matsuura announced he would shortly be putting in place a structure consisting of four distinct entities, one of which would deal with cultural expressions and creative industries. This division would be given its responsibility by the Secretariat of the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, which will come into effect on March 18, 2007. With this in mind, Mr. Matsuura continued, “I intend to organize an information meeting for permanent delegates in the month of March in order to discuss the main steps leading to its actual implementation. I also intend to hold the first meeting of the Assembly of Member States early this May in order to begin work on developing operational guidelines.”
