UNESCO reports that the call for candidatures has been launched for the sixth edition of the Sharjah Prize for Arab Culture honoring initiatives to develop and disseminate Arab culture. The prize, a collaboration between UNESCO and the government of the United Arab Emirates, rewards the efforts of a national from an Arab Member State and a national from any other country, each of whom have contributed through artistic, intellectual, or promotional pursuits, to the development and dissemination of Arab culture throughout the world.
This Prize was first awarded in 2001, then annually in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006. It consists of a sum of US$ 50,000 offered by the Government of Sharjah, to be divided equally between the two laureates, selected by the Director-General of UNESCO on the basis of the recommendation of the International Jury established for that purpose.
