On November 23, 2008, over 90 theaters across France will present selections of European films under the banner “Les étoiles du cinéma européen” (The Stars of European Cinema).
In an editorial written for the occasion, French Minister of Culture and Communication Christine Albanel made a number of statements, including the following: “As part of the French presidency of the European Union, the Ministry of Culture and Communication wanted to train the spotlight on the best of European film production from the last three years by giving French audiences the opportunity to discover or revisit 27 European films at an affordable price.”
We invite you to read the full text of this editorial. In it, Minister Albanel states that “European cinema is currently undergoing a renaissance” and describes the situation in detail. She also describes the efforts which, in her opinion, must be made “to encourage the circulation of European productions within the Union.”
Ms. Albanel ends her editorial by congratulating Costa-Gavras, which sponsored the operation. She also thanks all the partners involved in the event—the distributors of the 27 selected films, the 92 theaters across France who are taking part, Fédération nationale des cinémas français, AFCAE (Association française des cinémas d'art et essai), Europacinemas, Europalaces, UGC, CGR, SOREDIC and Capciné, Fédération nationale des distributeurs de films, DIRE (European network independent distributors), Allo Cine, Canal +, and Euro RSCG.
