The International Organization of La Francophonie signs an agreement with Lithuania —French and partner languages

The International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF) has announced that an agreement to reinforce the French-language capabilities of Lithuanian civil servants specializing in European affairs was signed in Vilnius on Monday, November 17, 2008 at the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The memorandum will affect five hundred Lithuanian civil servants and diplomats over the next three years.

The press release issued to mark the agreement notes that during the 11th Summit of Heads of State and Governments of La Francophonie in Bucharest in 2006), “the OIF obtained a clear commitment from its member heads of state and governments to promote the use of French in international and regional organizations.” According to the press release, the OIF signed similar agreements with a total of 15 European states.

The OIF notes that the cooperation program it is implementing will provide French-language training for 13,000 diplomats and civil servants annually in some 25 capitals. The press release adds that, to provide this training, framework and partnership agreements have been signed with training organizations in European capitals. These organizations include French cultural alliances and institutions, national schools of public administration, foreign affairs institutes, and civil service training institutes.
