A French-language fund for cinema development is set up

Québec’s Minister of Culture, Communications and the Status of Women, Christine St-Pierre, has announced that SODEC (Société de développement des entreprises culturelles) and Telefilm Canada, in conjunction with partners from the French Community of Belgium, France, Luxemburg, and Switzerland have agreed to a deal on the creation of a francophone film development fund. The fund seeks to inject capital into coproductions of French-language narrative feature films.

At a recent regular meeting of the francophone partners in Cannes, representatives from Québec, the rest of Canada, and the French Community of Belgium, France, Luxemburg, and Switzerland approved the provisional agreement and expressed a desire to encourage and bolster film industry alliances between these countries in a fast-changing global environment.

The fund, which has a €300,000 budget, seeks to promote and develop French-language coproductions. Québec and the rest of Canada will each contribute €100,000, with the other partners each investing €25,000. Festival International du Film Francophone de Namur will manage the budget.
