Photographer Malick Sidibé of Mali captures the Photo España 2009 prize

Malian photographer Malick Sidibé recently received the Photo España Baume & Mercier 2009 award in honor of his outstanding work as a portrait artist. According to the website of Jeune Afrique, Malick Sidibé, in acknowledging the award, expressed pleasure that his art had been able to convey Africa’s message to the world.

Portraits shot by Malick Sidibé in his studio during the 1950s and 1960s provide insight into an important period of African history. He has previously received a Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale, Sweden’s Hasselblad Award, and a lifetime achievement award from the International Center for Photography (ICP) in New York.
