A conference on the Convention for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions held in Toluca, Mexico

The Department of Social Development and Citizen Participation and the Department of Education, Culture, and Health of the Municipality of Toluca in Mexico held a conference on the Convention for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.

Chaired by Gabriel Larrea Richerand, President of the Mexican Copyright Institute, the conference highlighted the importance of protecting copyright on all artistic creations from every group in the municipality. Mr. Richerand explained that Mexico's rich multicultural heritage requires particular attention to the value of the variety of cultural products and the copyright held by creators, bearing in mind that the Senate of the Republic of Mexico ratified the UNESCO Convention in 2006.

He also stated that the alliance between government bodies and civil society is the key to protecting the intellectual creative rights of indigenous groups and discussed the efforts of the Coalition for Cultural Diversity to get Mexico to ratify the Convention.
