First Cultural Diversity Awards bestowed

On December 5, 2011, Pascal Rogard, president of the French Coalition for Cultural Diversity and general director for Société des auteurs et compositeurs dramatiques (SACD), had the honor of handing out the first Cultural Diversity Awards, a French Coalition initiative. The awards are intended to showcase initiatives, reward professional and artistic careers, and encourage good practices that help promote and defend cultural diversity.

The awards are granted based on proposals submitted for examination by a jury of French Coalition members. They may be symbolic in nature (medal), i.e., moral recognition of a known person, or take the form of a cash prize of 3,000 euros awarded to assist a small association or individual in their actions to promote cultural diversity.

Cultural Diversity Award winners for 2011 are:

  • Mr. Jean Musitelli, member of the permanent committee of the French Commission for UNESCO and former ambassador of France at UNESCO, who was also a contributor and a key player of the UNESCO Convention for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.
  • Mr. Jack Ralite, a former minister and senator in France and an acknowledged specialist on cultural matters in the French Parliament, where he sat on the cultural affairs committee. Mr. Ralite has been a staunch defender, both in France and internationally, of the cultural exception and cultural diversity, as well as the importance of preserving the specificity of cultural goods and services in international trade negotiations.
  • Festival musiques métisses d’Angoulême, an event whose rich program and dedication to fostering connections between artists, authors, and their audiences constitute a positive step for the expression of cultural diversity.

Created in 1997, the French Coalition for Cultural Diversity today numbers some 50 professional organizations from film, television, the performing arts, publishing, music, the graphic and visual arts, and multimedia sectors that have joined together to defend freedom of expression and creation and the right of each state to define its policy to support artistic creation.
