The International Award UCLG–Mexico City–Culture 21 went this year to the city of Vaudreuil-Dorion in Québec’s Montérégie region in recognition of its program “I Am—The Adventure of a Community in Transformation”. It was shared jointly with the city of Timbuktu in Mali. The award recognizes city, local, or regional governments for outstanding contributions to culture as a key aspect of a sustainable city. Vaudreuil-Dorion’s I Am is a cultural mediation program that since 2010 has been building a unified community that understands differences as a resource. Each year 20,000 residents take part in 50 activities divided into more than 600 workshops.
The jury also made special mention of Lac-Mégantic’s program “Rebuilding Lac-Mégantic”.
